The recovery from the Cape Epic, which was successful for him, took longer than expected, but previous experiences had taught him to take his time. Unfortunately, Ruijter faced a setback early in the race in Houffalize on Saturday after a sharp stone cut into the side of his tire. He repaired the hole with three plugs and reached the technical zone where he was able to install a new rear wheel.
“After that, I was far behind, but I felt my shape was good and I gave everything to get back on the podium. Unfortunately, I fell half a minute short of still being able to fight for the win with Simon Gregoire after 91 kilometers. I did manage to leave Frans Cleas behind me in the final, so I could still return home with a second place. I am therefore traveling to the World Cup race on Elba this coming weekend with a lot of confidence,” said Ruijter.
