Mariëlle Trouwborst rode to a silver medal at the National Championships Beachrace today. The race in Renesse, Zeeland, consisted of two laps of 35 kilometers and the strong wind made it a tough race. After the first turning point, five women remained at the head of the race heading for the first finish passage.
In the second round the leading group thinned out to three women and Trouwborst managed to leave her last fellow escapees Tessa Neefjes and Femke Markus behind on a tough downwind section of beach. Trouwborst seemed to be on her way to the red white and blue jersey, but Neefjes managed to overtake her in extremis and passed her in the loose sand strip to the finish.
