In the second stage from Livigno to Bormio, Roel Verhoeven and Tim Smeenge made their mark. On the last climb they broke free from their fellow leaders Steffen Thum and Rob van den Haasenvelde and made up for almost four minutes on the general classification leaders Manuel Pliem and David Schöggl who came in third.
“We didn’t win the stage without a fight. In the penultimate climb we lost contact but managed to come back and gave everything for the stage victory in the last climb. With this move we even gained thirty seconds and great to win here in Bormio. Today we rode in a special outfit in honor of the 75th anniversary of our bicycle sponsor Lapierre, with this victory we could give them a suitable birthday present.’, says Smeenge.
