Lola Bakker was unable to defend her title in the five-day mountain bike stage race, the Appenninica MTB stage race, but finished in second place this year. Estonian Greete Steinburg proved too strong for Bakker in this edition. Bakker started well in Vidiciatico with a second place finish behind Brazilian winner Luiza De Souza. The second stage from Belvedere to Riolunato, featuring over 2,600 meters of elevation gain, was won by American Syd Schulz, who managed to stay ahead of Steinburg. Bakker finished fourth but remained classified as second.<\/p>\n
In the third short, explosive stage around Riolunato, overall leader Steinburg managed to win her first stage by leaving Bakker and Italian Maria Paresi behind. The queen stage from Riolunato to Castelnovo ne’ Monti, covering 91 kilometers, was also claimed by the Estonian. Bakker had a very tough day in the heat but did not give up and finished third after more than six hours. With that, she also managed to hold onto her second place in the standings.<\/p>\n
On the final day, Bakker managed to win her stage after all. “The race was still open today and I wanted to win at all costs. I felt strong from the start and decided to ride at my own pace. I attacked on the descent and opened up a gap of about a minute, but Greete caught up on the climb of the Pietra di Bismantova. From there we rode together to the finish and I managed to stay ahead of her. Maria Paresi finished third in the standings after five days, behind Steinburg and Bakker.<\/p>\n
